Welcome, fellow quilters and sewing enthusiasts! If you’ve been curious about appliqué but felt a little intimidated by the technique, you’re in the right place. In today’s blog post, we’re going to walk you through a beginner-friendly appliqué technique using funky mushroom blocks as part of a vibrant, 1970s-inspired patchwork quilt. This simple and creative project will give you the confidence to explore appliqué and add some playful details to your quilts.
Whether you’ve sewn a quilt before or are completely new to quilting, the appliqué technique we’re using in this project is perfect for beginners. If you’re new to the technique, don’t worry—I’ll guide you every step of the way! Plus, if you want to follow along visually, check out my appliqué tutorial video for all the details.
Why Appliqué?
Appliqué is a sewing technique where you attach smaller fabric pieces onto a larger fabric background. It’s a fun and versatile way to add intricate designs, shapes, or even whimsical touches like these funky mushrooms to your quilts. For a beginner, it might seem a little tricky at first, but with a little practice, you’ll find that appliqué is a fantastic way to personalize your projects.
The great thing about appliqué is that it allows you to create bold, eye-catching designs on your quilt blocks that are hard to achieve with piecing alone. Think of it like adding illustrations to your patchwork quilt. You can use appliqué to bring elements like flowers, animals, and, in this case, funky mushrooms, to life!

Materials You’ll Need
Before we dive into the steps, let’s talk about the supplies you’ll need for this project. Don’t worry, none of this is complicated or expensive, and I’ve made sure to keep things beginner-friendly.
- Fabric: Choose fabrics that match the retro, 1970s vibe for your mushroom appliqué! A combination of warm earthy tones like orange, brown, and green will give you that vintage look.
- Background fabric: A solid fabric in a complementary color (think beige, cream, or even a soft pastel) to contrast with the mushroom appliqué. I am really leaning into the 1970s vibe by using Kona Cocoa, a dark, earthy brown, and Kona Ivy, a retro army green.
- Thread: A matching or contrasting thread for stitching your appliqué down. I recommend a 100% cotton thread.
- Appliqué adhesive: You’ll need either a fusible web or a fabric adhesive like Heat n’ Bond to bond the mushroom shapes to your background fabric. I suggest using fusible web for ease.
- Scissors: For cutting the fabric shapes precisely.

Step 1: Create Your Mushroom Templates
The first step in making your funky mushroom appliqué blocks is to create the templates for your mushrooms. You can either draw your mushroom shapes by hand or use printable templates available online. If you’re drawing by hand, you can make them as whimsical or as simple as you like.
For a retro feel, consider making mushroom caps in bold, rounded shapes and adding fun details like polka dots, stripes, or even swirls. Once you have your designs, cut them out carefully to use as templates for your fabric pieces.

Step 2: Cut Out Your Fabric Pieces
Next, it’s time to cut out your fabric pieces for the mushrooms. You’ll need a few different parts: the mushroom cap, the mushroom stem, and any fun extra details like spots or accents.
For the mushroom stems, you might want to use a solid color like brown or tan, and for the caps, get creative with bold patterns or colors. The more funky and colorful, the better!
For this step, trace your templates onto the fusible web or fabric adhesive. Then, following the instructions for your adhesive, iron the fusible web to the wrong side of your fabric. Once it’s adhered, cut out the fabric pieces carefully. To avoid having raw edges of fabric, make sure to leave a 1/4 to 1/2 inch border around the entire perimeter of your template pieces. Then you can fold the fabric over to create a clean edge.

Step 3: Fuse the Mushroom Pieces to Your Background Fabric
Now that your mushroom shapes are cut out, it’s time to fuse them onto the background fabric. Start by arranging your mushroom pieces where you want them on your quilt block. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect—this is a creative, free-spirited project, and the fun of appliqué is all about experimenting!
Once you’ve found the right placement, follow the instructions on your fusible web to adhere the pieces to the background fabric. This usually involves pressing with a hot iron for a few seconds to set the adhesive.

Step 4: Stitch Your Appliqué Pieces
Here comes the fun part—stitching your appliqué! For beginners, I recommend a simple straight stitch or a zigzag stitch around the edges of the mushroom pieces. These stitches will secure your fabric to the background fabric while giving it a beautiful, finished look.
You can also get creative with decorative stitches or thread colors to add more detail and texture to your appliqué. Use contrasting thread for a bold look or matching thread for a more subtle, seamless finish.

Step 5: Assemble Your Quilt
Once you’ve finished appliquéing all your funky mushrooms onto the quilt blocks, it’s time to assemble the quilt! Arrange your patchwork quilt blocks in the layout you like and sew them together. From here, you can add borders, batting, and backing to complete your quilt.
