Telling a Fabric Story: How to Mix and Match Fabrics for Beginners

Have you ever fallen in love with a fabric and wondered how to turn it into a beautiful, coordinated project? Sometimes, all you need is one special print to get your creative ideas flowing!

In my latest YouTube video, I’m sharing my most recent fast and fun patchwork minky blanket top and showing how I build a fabric story around a favorite feature fabric. It’s a simple, enjoyable way to create a design that feels intentional, coordinated, and full of personality.

Start with Your Star Fabric

Every great fabric story needs a starting point, and mine begins with the feature fabric. This is the print that catches your eye and inspires the overall look of the blanket. For this patchwork top, I am using this silly owl print that combines bold colors and a whimsical drawing style.

It might be a whimsical character print, a colorful floral, a playful novelty fabric, or something with a theme you simply can’t resist. Whatever you choose, let that fabric guide your color palette and help you decide which supporting prints will work best.

Build Your Supporting Cast

Once you’ve chosen your star fabric, it’s time to bring in the supporting cast! Look for coordinating prints that pick up colors, repeat visual elements, or complement the style of your feature fabric. Since my star print features owls, I am expanding on the woodland creature and bird theme with another wonky, handdrawn print featuring bears, owls and foxes in the woods and a birdhouse print with tiny coral flowers and mushrooms.

Then, add blenders. These are the quieter fabrics that give the eye a place to rest and help the busier prints shine. As you can see, I have included prints that repeat the triangles, diamonds and leaves in both a strong geometric and a hand drawn feel. A good mix of feature prints, supporting fabrics, and blenders creates balance without making the design feel too predictable.

Think of it as casting a movie: every fabric has a part to play, and the magic happens when they work together!

Put the Patchwork Together

The fun part is watching your fabric story come to life! In the accompanying YouTube video, I walk you through my fabric choices and show how the different prints come together to create a lively patchwork blanket top. I have made so many of these fabulous patchwork tops over the years and I never get tired of the possibilities. For reference, HERE is a small selection of my past combinations for inspiration.

This is a great project when you want something creative and satisfying without an overly complicated process. And because the finished top is designed for a cozy minky blanket, it has the potential to become a treasured gift or a special handmade addition to your home.
